What is Palo Azul?

Palo Azul means "blue stick" in Spanish, and it gets its name because the bark of the plant is used to brew a tea which produces an incredible blue fluorescence! Palo Azul's fluorescence is caused by polyphenols, which are phytonutrients that plants produce to defend themselves from stress.

Palo Azul wood is a popular medicinal herb commonly found in Hispanic grocery stores. Palo Azul is also known as Eysenhardtia polystachya or kidneywood, Palo Azul is a tree that is native to northern and central Mexico and Arizona.

What does Palo Azul Tea do?

Palo Azul is traditionally used to treat inflammation, and bladder, kidney, and urinary infections. Palo Azul has also been promoted for its detoxifying benefits.

Recently, several studies have found that Palo Azul showed anti-inflammatory activity due to its flavonoid-rich content

Palo Azul tea is also 0 caffeine, 0 calories, and 0 sugar, and it has a silky smooth, earthy flavor.

Numerous studies have shown that Palo Azul tea exhibited significant antioxidant activity due to its polyphenolic/flavonoid-rich content.

A study found that "the bark of Palo Azul induces an increase in urinary excretion of water and sodium, similar to furosemide, but with the advantage of a potassium-saving effect", which means that it flushes out toxins without electrolyte loss because it spares potassium, so it doesn't lead to dehydration.

How to use Palo Azul?

Palo Azul comes in the form of wood chips. The tea is made from approximately 1-2 ounces of Palo Azul. Using a tea infuser/filter bag/strainer simmer Palo Azul and 1 gallon of filtered water for 1 hour (steep longer or overnight for optimal benefits)

**If you over-boil the Palo Azul bark, it might denature the flavonoids and it won’t look blue because the flavonoids are the nutrients that make it blue. This is why you should simmer on low heat as soon as it reaches a boil. The reason we recommend boiling it, is because the higher heat is necessary to open up the pores of the wood and extract the nutrients into the tea.

Serve chilled or warm and drink over a period of several hours. The result is smooth, warm, and friendly with earthly tones.
