theo travis & robert fripp »thread« 2lp (tf62)

judging by the illustrious names on its cover, thread was a safe bet. what, after all, could possibly go wrong by putting these two accomplished musicians in the same room: robert fripp's immediately identifiable guitar style has influenced leagues of instrumentalists, while his work as the spiritual leader of king crimson has taken rock music both to its most extreme and most undiluted emotional moments. theo travis, on the other hand, has expanded his status as 'one of britain's very best young tenor players' into a double career as a formidable ensemble leader and a solo performer in the realms of slow-flowing flute drones. fripp and travis however envisioned thread to be much more than a mere spin-off from their regular projects: just a single day of recording was scheduled, putting seminal importance on each note. the equipment was to consist exclusively of flutes, guitars and a couple of effect pedals. and there were to be as few overdubs as possible.
thanks to its daring design,
thread has turned out an adventurous album. with track lengths ranging between two minutes and almost a quarter of an hour, it walks a razor-sharp tightrope between floating nocturnal jazz etudes, brooding ambient tranquility, stripped-down passages of instrumental purity and tender orchestral swells. a hazy and unreal mood between sleeping and waking permeates these dreamstates whose gaze always seems to be turned to the inside. while the cd version already provided a glimpse of the awe-inspiring dimensions of the sessions, it is only the 2lp edition (available in limited editions of 200 copies each on white, orange and blue vinyl, and as always with tonefloat pressed on heavy 180 grams vinyl) which stays true to the original colossal scale of the project. stretching out over four sides and adding previously unavailable sections to the music, it allows listeners to dive headlong into a sensual world in which the musical direction is determined by subtle shifts and not even the most obvious points of departure can be considered 'safe bets' anymore.
