What Are Ear Mites?
There are several types of mites that can live in your dog’s ear, but the most common are otodectes cynotis, as the name suggests, ear mites are a tiny spider like parasitic mite that infect the ears of dogs and cats. Ear mites feed on epidermal debris & ear wax. They burrow into the ear, causing inflammation which the body responds to by producing more wax. An individual mite has a three-week life cycle, and is barely visible to the naked eye. Causing irritation and inflammation, ear mites can infect the external and internal canal, and lead to more serious skin or ear infections if left untreated. Infection usually produces a characteristic dark and sometimes unpleasant smelling discharge, in some cases, the ear canal can become entirely blocked.
What Causes Ear Mites?
Ear mites are highly contagious, mites are most common in outdoor cats, who can infect their canine companions. They are most often passed from pet to pet in casual contact at home or outside. It is therefore a good idea to check all pets, if one becomes infected. Thankfully humans are generally immune to ear mites!
What Are the General Symptoms of Ear Mites in Dogs?
Excessive scratching and rubbing of ears, head shaking black or brown wax, strong odour and inflammation/obstruction of ear canal with dark brown discharge. Ear mites are terribly uncomfortable for your dog. Imagine how it would feel having thousands of little bugs running around in one of your most sensitive areas. Usually the first symptom you notice will be your dog scratching his ears or shaking his head due to the extreme itchiness that the mites cause. His ears may be painful to touch and he may cry in pain when you touch them or while he is scratching them. He may rub his face along the ground trying to relieve the itching. You may also notice an unpleasant odour coming from the ears. Dogs may cause damage by scratching, causing the ears to bleed. They may also shake their ears with such intensity that small blood vessels are broken and hematomas form.
Ears, and General Body Itching
A vet in Australia has isolated the mite that causes intense itching and distress in dogs, who are continually scratching and biting parts of their body. The vet says the ear mite has transferred itself to the scurf of the body. It is tiny and very mobile. Vets can find nothing wrong - skin scrapings sent to vet college give a clean bill of health. Shampooing is useless. Treatment - dust some Clearit lightly onto the skin. If animal has long hair, part the hair with a comb, feeding a trickle of Clearit to exposed skin. A little powder goes a long way.
Anus Itching If the animal pulls it's bottom on the floor, and it is not gland trouble, the mites may have began breeding under the tail. Treatment - Apply a tiny amount of cream or Vaseline to finger of glove and dip into the Clearit powder. Apply to just under tail where necessary.
Itchy Paws Mites can get between the claws, making the animal first lick the paw constantly, turning the pads to jelly. Then they tear out the fur, and finally chew until there are sores. Treatment - Hold the paw in a plastic bag containing a small amount of Clearit. Work powder between claws, into pads and a little way up the leg.
