An original Canon flash for EOS digital SLRs and selected Powershot compact cameras, plus EOS film SLRs
This is a Speedlite 380EX flash unit from Canon for all EOS digital and
film SLRs, the EOS M digital compact system camera, plus Powershot
digital compact cameras with a hot shoe. It has a bounce and zoom head,
AF illuminator, and provides fully automatic dedicated TTL or E-TTL
flash control, plus High Speed FP flash synchronisation on suitable
models. It's in very good condition, and comes with Canon case and a set
of new Alkaline batteries, plus you can download a copy of the
instructions free of charge from Canon (see link below).
Motorised zoom flash head with 24mm extra wide, 28mm and 35mm wide
angle, 50mm standard plus 70mm and 105mm portrait and telephoto
positions, to give extra coverage for wide angle lenses, and extra range
with telephotos. The power zoom adjusts automatically for different
lenses, even zooms. The flash head tilts up to 90 degrees for bounce
flash, which gives much softer, more natural lighting than direct flash,
and reduces the chance of redeye.
The guide number varies with the zoom setting, from 38m (123 feet) at
105mm, to 21m (68 feet) at 24mm, with ISO 100. Theoretical maximum range
of up to 17m (56 feet) with 50mm f/1.8 lens and ISO 100, and even more
at higher ISO settings. As with all flashguns, actual range will depend
on the conditions. Thyristor circuitry provides faster recycling and
more flashes per set of batteries at closer distances, and an auto check
light confirms correct exposure.
E-TTL (Evaluative Through The Lens) flash control system for extremely
accurate exposures, compensating automatically for bounce flash,
filters, extension tubes/bellows and other factors. TTL dedicated flash
is used on older film cameras that don't support E-TTL. Works
automatically in all exposure modes including program, setting the
shutter speed and/or aperture automatically as appropriate. High Speed
FP flash mode works with E-TTL cameras, allowing flash to be used at all
shutter speeds - ideal for fill in outdoors. Flash Exposure Lock (FE)
mode for off-centre subjects on E-TTL cameras. Compatible with film and
digital cameras that offer flash exposure compensation.
The flash works in the camera's autofocus mode, and has a large AF
illuminator on the front to assist focusing in low light on selected
cameras. This projects a coloured pattern onto the subject for the
camera's AF system (centre AF point only) to lock onto even in complete
darkness, when used with selected cameras - some have their own AF
illuminator which is used instead.
It's compact and lightweight at only around 115mm (4.5 inches) tall on
the camera, and 270g without batteries. Power is supplied by 4x standard
AA batteries, and alkaline disposable (included) or rechargeable NiCd
and NiMH types can be used. The battery compartment cover is captive, so
it can't easily be dropped or lost. An auto power saving features shuts
down 90 seconds after being used. Standard hot shoe fitting, with
locking collar for secure mounting.
An excellent flash unit for all Canon EOS SLR and many Powershot users
