 Description ~

Palo Santo (Burseara Graveolens) or "Holy Stick" is a natural wood aromatic incense used for centuries by the Incas and indigenous people of the Andes as a spiritual remedy for purifying and cleansing, as well as to get rid of the evil spirits and misfortune.  Palo santo’s fragrance is sweet and citric. Its notes stimulate the person using it to be in touch with their own inner self, generating special states of concentration, balance, calm and peace. When it is burned, the small sticks generate a clear colour fire that will drive away bad energies far from the home.  The area where the subtle smoke has been placed, appears impregnated with a spiritual aura. In fact, the vapour that the aromatic smoke generates has been considered since ancient times to be a direct path in contact with positive energy and Divinity.

The name Palo Santo means "Holy Wood", and what a fitting name that is. The magic of Palo Santo is in the alchemical process that happens after the death of a limb or a tree. In order for the Palo Santo to gain its magical and medicinal properties it must die, but not just any death – only a natural death of a wise old limb or tree. The Palo Santo trees live for 80 to 90 years. After this death the tree must remain in its natural habitat for 4 to 10 years to complete its metamorphosis. Only then do its sacred, medicinal and mystical properties come alive. Palo Santo has been used for thousands of years in Peru and Ecuador by shamans and healers. Today through the Andes Mountains you can still find shamans, curanderos, and healers using Palo Santo as part of their ceremonies and fire rituals.. Increasingly the healing properties of Palo Santo are finding its way into the rest of the world as one of the truly great resins of Mother Earth.

It has capacities in both physical and metaphysical realms. Palo Santo has even caught the attention of western scientific researchers for it chemical properties, which include limonene and monterpenes that are being studied for their anti cancer effects. It’s truly amazing that this “Holy Wood” can at once, through the healing scent and sacred smoke, provide energetic protection, remove bad energy, uplift the spirit and bring good luck as well as repel mosquitoes and treat a headache.

Whether you believe in metaphysics or not, smudging your home with the subtle smoke of palo santo can provide a state of calmness and relaxation that will help you to keep negative thoughts at bay.

How To Use ~

Use a candle, match or lighter to ignite your stick of Palo Santo.  Hold at about a 45 degree angle pointing the tip down toward the flame.  Allow it to burn for about 30 seconds to 1 minute and then blow out.  Move about your workspace, home, car, bathroom or anywhere you would like to clear the energy.  The rich smell will also bring peace and clarity to the moment along with good feelings .  When finished, place the stick in a fire proof bowl of metal, glass or clay.  The glow will end on its own unless you blow on the ember which will keep the smoke going. Unlike conventional incense, which burns completely after lighting, Palo Santo can be relit many times.
