If the cans you are using or considering buying have matching body, cap and strap color, then those are military surplus cans which were built for use with diesel fuel only and may not have a suitable gasket for gasoline. If you use the gasket designed for diesel fuel for gasoline, it may result in damage to the inner flange that would cause it to no longer retain the gasket and in the worst case would damage the inner flange leaving the can unsealable.
