HOW TO GROW
WATER LILIES
Step 1
Use a container that is at least 6 inches deep,
fill approximately 3 inches with garden soil or
special water plant soil and compress it down.
Slowly add 2 inches of warm water ontop
of the soil and let any disturbed soil settle (you can
pat it down again if necessary).
Step 2
Sprinkle seeds through the warm water onto the
top of the soil as evenly as possible. Once they have
settled sprinkle a thin layer of white sand over the top
of the seeds (again through the water)- this helps anchor
the seeds and also helps to see the sprouts
as germination begins.
Warmer water temperatures are preferred
for germination to occur so the container needs
to be placed in a warm greenhouse or sunny
windowsill for germination to occur. If in cold
season a heat mat may be needed and kept
around 20°C/70°F.
Step 3
Watch for thready leaves to begin emerging
between 6-8 weeks.
Move the seedlings as they grow to
larger pots that are more deeply submerged.
Plant one water lily per container and cover to the top
of its root ball with soil - compress the soil gently and
cover with warm water.
Step 4
Lilies can be put in their final location in a pond,
pool or other water garden spot once they have
at least three leaves that are a decent size, it is
best to do this after Winter has passed. Repeat
the re-potting as above and then submerge your
lilies into it's final location.
Its likely to be the second full season that you will
see the lily bloom but it can happen in the first.
Final position should be full sun.
Water Lilies take roughly 12-18 months
to flower.
