Coin collecting back in the early 1950s was fun because it was very possible to find circulation coins dating back to the early 1900s.  That meant the collector could sometimes find Indian Head Pennies, Liberty Head and Buffalo Nickels, Mercury Dimes as well as the Barber series coins.  Even silver dollars dating back to the 1870s could be obtained at most banks, why did I not purchase all of the available ones?  (Probably lack of money to invest at that time!)  Lincoln Pennies was an especially popular series for us kids to collect.  It seemed like every kid on the block had a coin folder for Lincoln Head Pennies and putting pennies in those folders was quite affordable for us, much more so than collecting quarters or half dollars!    I searched hundreds of rolls back then to hopefully find the elusive 1909-S, the1914-D and the 1931-S dates, and of course the ultimate of the series, the 1909-S with the VDB on the reverse.  I was successful in finding the 1909-S and the 1931-S but it was a stroke of luck that a neighbor lady gave me the 1909-S VDB and the 1914-D that she had in a coin folder in trade for my shoveling her walks one winter.  I guess that one good turn deserves another!   Hope you enjoyed my story and see the particulars of this auction below.
