This listing is offering 22mm (approx) thick machined and ***SANDED***! English Character Grade Oak Planks in a choice of board widths and plank lengths.

Please read my lovely listing in full as it tries to explain in detail what I am offering.

These English Oak Planks are supplied to the following specification:-

Width can be supplied in 25mm increments from 50mm upto 400mm wide. ( subject to specified tolerances )

Length can be supplied in 200mm increments from 400mm upto 2400mm long. ( subject to specified tolerances )

Larger planks than offered in this listing may be available upto 600mm in width and upto 4m in length but supply is sketchy on large sizes so please call to discuss your requirement and what I have available.

These character grade Oak Planks are Kiln Dried and supplied planed then sanded to 100 grit finish via a through feed sander so are very flat, even and smooth. The finish is fine enough to oil straight away or you can refine them a little further with finer grit sanding if you have the energy. The edges are a planed finish and will need light sanding.

I cant emphasize this enough - these boards are all Sanded ( apart from maybe small low areas). Oak is very HARD and one of the hardest woods to sand, if you choose to purchase unsanded boards for less money you will probably end up spending more by the time you have paid for the sanding materials (belts/pads etc) and still wont get as good a surface as a through feed sander even though you have spent hours trying. Oak always suffers Tear Out when it is planed, this is very difficult and time consuming to sand out with hand held sanding machines. Sanded boards are worth every penny extra and then some!! Smooth and flat, Mmmmm - Nice!!

I do not stock finished and ready material as there are just too many possible sizes, I have unsorted planks and pick and process them as the orders are placed, as a result I do NOT offer same or next day shipping on this listing, the terms of dispatch are orders are shipped within three days. You can choose a 24 hour shipping service rather than the economy 3-5 day service but the dispatch time remains at within 3 days.

The offered size is a guide only and is subject to the following tolerances :-           ( I try to be as close to the ordered size as possible but always within tollerance.)

Thickness Tollerance is +3/-2mm. (ie max 25mm - min 20mm) If I process a board and it ends up a good board at 25mm thick i will leave it so rather than turn the extra thickness into sawdust!!

Also, as the board width & length goes up, more has to be removed from the raw plank to get it flat accross that larger width and length, this translates to wide or long boards being closer to the lower limit.

Also to maintain the thickness of the boards sometimes there are some small low patches below the planed/sanded surface, a little sanding will be needed to clean these up. ( maximum 5% of the surface area)

Width Tollerance is +20mm / -5mm for boards upto 225mm wide. For boards 250mm wide and above  + 17mm / -8mm. (ie if you select 200mm wide it will be parallel somewhere between 195mm and 220mm)

Length Tollerance is +160mm / -40mm.  Example, If the selected length is 1000mm the actual length can be anywhere between 960mm and 1160mm. Most will be longer  ( lucky you!!! )

The photos are examples of the material on offer but are not the actual pieces that you will receive.

Please use the drop down boxes above to select your pieces by their Width and length.

***** If You require more than a single individual piece (or stock is out in this listing) then please use this alternative listing offering the same material. Also at a lower shipping rate!*****

English character grade Oak is a product of nature and nature is far from perfect, you will never find a perfect piece. I Guarantee that every piece will contain character ( Not  defects ) such as surface shakes, heartwood splits/cracks, pips and knots, end cracks/splits, uneven colour,  the odd worm and beetle hole here and there etc and I will be unhappy to accept returns for such things. If artifacts of character really bother you then that is what filler is for!! That being said, I will in no way send anything that I would class as lower in quality than the examples in the photos. What follows is obvious but I will point it out anyway, the larger the board the more elements of character it will have, the knots will be bigger, shakes wider, cracks longer and more bug holes  - it is what it is lovely natural wood. Also, the larger the plank the more undulating it becomes during drying, this leaves a difficult choice - plane everything out and reduce the board thickness or leave some lower dips un-planed to maintain the thickness, I choose to keep the thickness and let you sand the low spots - lucky you!!

As mentioned, boards may have end shakes/splits ( THAT'S JUST WHAT OAK DOES!! ). I could cut all these off and waste masses of timber and put the price up to cover it - or - I could leave them all there -  I have chosen to compromise and offer boards that may have end shakes that travel into the board upto half the width of the board, this will be ( if at  all ) on one end only except for boards 2200mm and above that may have them both ends. If this is a problem for you and you wish to make sure there are no end shakes/splits just order the next length up, add a message at checkout, and I will trim them clean of splits/shakes - easy as that!!!

If you have read all the way to here well done!  I'm sorry to bore you with details, I want you to be happy.

On Offer

Wood, wood, wood and more wood - Not much to say really that I hope the photos don't!  The wood is not treated in any way and has been planed and sanded to show off its beauty and character ( you may still want to put in some elbow grease with some finer paper though - I haven't taken all the fun out of it ). I like to deal with happy customers, happy customers are people who receive exactly what they are expecting, so if you have read the description and studied the photos I assure you I will in no way intentionally send out a piece that I don't think you would like, that said, please respect the fact that it is not a lump of plastic but a natural product that has, does and will continue to interact with its environment.

About Me

I am a one man band ( not musically!) and I source mainly English hardwoods and process them into useful pieces. It starts with interesting trees that are being taken down for whatever reason (dead/dying, diseased, dangerous, in the way of development, wind fallen etc) These trees are then milled into useful and manageable planks ready for their 6 week holiday in my nice toasty kiln. After drying they are left to relax for a further few weeks just chilling in the shade. By this stage they are now seasoned, dry and stable and ready for processing into useful pieces that you can turn into beautiful things - Simples! I do also have some alien timbers too, like Iroko and Sapele not from these shores.
