Antique Celluloid Kushi-Kanzashi Hair Ornament


This item came from the Gion Kobu Geisha District of Kyoto. It is probably made of a vintage type of celluloid, lacquered in gold. It ia probably 60-80 years old. It Measures: 8.5cm (3¼") in length and has a slight curve from end to end.

Weight: 12g


Kanzashi like this are normally not used as a comb but rather worn as an ornament in the hair. It is in very good condition for its age with only normal wear and has a lovely antique patina.


Note that the teeth of antique combs occasionally contain a kind of wax called “Bintsuke Abura” which is used to shape “Nihongami" hairstyles - it is often possible to remove it if you are careful not to damage the lacquer.
