It should be noted that iron filings will rust in oxidising conditions unless coated with a suitable agent, Linseed oil is recommended for this. Iron filings have also widely been used in magnetism experiments.

• Bright, fresh cut, these have a brighter iron surface, rounder particle shape and tight particle size range.
• Dark, these have a broader particle size, flatter shape and have an Fe(II)O coating.
