Measures 10 1/4  x  10 1/4  x  5 1/4 inches.. This is a Fulani (also known as the Peul or Bororo  people)  carved calabash bowl or food cover. Bought from one of Ireland's top auction houses in 2016. (Info to Buyer) Comes from an old Irish Collection from colonial times. (Anglo-Irish in service of British Empire) The calabash is an important item in African culture. They are used as cups, ladles, hats and bailers. The Igbo and Yoruba sometimes fashioned them into masks. Among the Wodaabe (Bororo) stacked sets of calabashes were exchanged as dowry.
