JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Japanese: ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 Hepburn: JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken), also known as JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: The Animation, is an anime television series produced by David Production based on the manga of the same name by Hirohiko Araki. The series focuses around the mysterious adventures of the Joestar family, beginning with an encounter involving Jonathan Joestar, his adoptive brother Dio Brando and a mysterious Stone Mask. The series is broadcast on Tokyo MX before entering syndication on 4 JNN stations, BS11, and Animax.
The first season, adapting the first two parts, Phantom Blood and Battle Tendency, aired in Japan between October 5, 2012 and April 5, 2013. In the United States, it aired on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block starting on October 15, 2016.[5] A second season covering the third part, Stardust Crusaders, aired between April 4, 2014 and June 19, 2015, and a third season covering the fourth part, Diamond Is Unbreakable, aired from April 1, 2016 to December 23, 2016. The series is distributed in North America by Warner Home Video for the DVD rights, while the Blu-ray and merchandising rights for the series are owned by Viz Media.[6] An adaption for the fifth part, Golden Wind, has been announced and will premiere in October 2018.
The first season aired in Japan between October 5, 2012 and April 5, 2013, with episodes 1-9 covering the Phantom Blood arc, and episodes 10-26 covering the Battle Tendency arc. The first part follows a young man named Jonathan Joestar who becomes involved in a battle against Dio Brando, who uses the power of a mysterious Stone Mask to become a vampire. The second part takes place fifty years later as Jonathan's grandson, Joseph Joestar, faces up against the Stone Mask's creators, the Pillar Men. The opening theme for the Phantom Blood arc is "JoJo ~Sono Chi no Sadame~" (ジョジョ～その血の運命～, "JoJo ~That Blood's Destiny~") by Hiroaki "Tommy" Tominaga, while the opening theme for the Battle Tendency arc is "Bloody Stream" by Coda. The ending theme for both arcs is British progressive rock band Yes' 1972 single "Roundabout".[9] Phantom Blood's score was composed by Hayato Matsuo while Battle Tendency's was performed by Taku Iwasaki.[10][11] The series was made available for streaming on Crunchyroll on April 4, 2014. Warner Home Video released the complete first season on DVD in North America on September 22, 2015 while Viz Media will release the series on Blu-ray Disc.[12][13] On television, the series began airing on Adult Swim's Toonami programming block on October 15, 2016.[5] Kaze UK licensed the first season in the UK on Blu-ray, with Manga Entertainment handling distribution of the series.
The second season, titled JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Stardust Crusaders, adapts the series third story arc, Stardust Crusaders. Set in 1987, the story follows Joseph's grandson, Jotaro Kujo, and his companions as they seek to defeat DIO, who has placed a curse on his mother, using special abilities known as Stands. The series is split into two halves, each lasting 24 episodes. The first half aired in Japan between April 4, 2014 and September 12, 2014, while the second half, subtitled Battle in Egypt, aired between January 9, 2015 and June 19, 2015.[17][18][19] For the first half, the opening theme is "Stand Proud" by Jin Hashimoto, while the ending theme is American band The Bangles' 1985 single "Walk Like an Egyptian". For the second half, the opening theme is "JoJo, Sono Chi no Kioku ~end of THE WORLD~" (ジョジョ その血の記憶～end of THE WORLD～, lit. "JoJo, That Blood's Memories (End of the World)") by JO☆STARS ~TOMMY,Coda,JIN~ (Hiroaki "Tommy" Tominaga, Coda, and Jin Hashimoto), while the main ending theme is the Pat Metheny Group's "Last Train Home", from their 1987 album Still Life (Talking). An alternate ending theme, "Aku-yaku Kyōsōkyoku" (アク役♢協奏曲, "Evil Concerto"), is performed by Oingo and Boingo (Makoto Yasumura and Motoko Kumai) in episode 27, and by Hol Horse and Boingo (Hidenobu Kiuchi and Motoko Kumai) in episodes 36-37. The score is composed by Yugo Kanno. The series was simulcast by Crunchyroll, with some character names altered to avoid copyright infringement. An English dub of the first three episodes was streamed on July 5, 2014.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure (Japanese: ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 Hepburn: JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken) is an original video animation adaptation of Hirohiko Araki's manga series of the same name, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure. Produced by A.P.P.P. (Another Push Pin Planning), it was adapted from the series' third part, Stardust Crusaders.
The first six episodes were originally released by Pony Canyon on VHS and Laserdisc from 1993 to 1994, adapting the latter half of the story arc. This set of episodes begins with Jotaro Kujo and his companions in the middle of their quest to find Dio Brando, offering very little exposition to the back-story that led to the present events of the OVA.
The second season, consisting of seven episodes, were released by Klock Worx on DVD and VHS from 2000 to 2002, featuring most of the same cast, but produced with different directors and writers. These additional episodes, titled "Adventure 1" through "7", served as a prequel to the earlier-produced episodes, adapting the beginning of the story arc that featured the circumstances that led to Jotaro's quest. The earlier episodes were subsequently re-released as part of this series, but renumbered as "Adventure 8" through "13" to take into account their later chronological placement. A DVD box set featuring all 13 episodes was released on May 25, 2007, which included a soundtrack CD and a set of 31 tarot cards illustrated by Hirohiko Araki.
The series was released in North America by Super Techno Arts. It was released on six DVD volumes 2003 to 2005, dubbed in English, with all 13 episodes also featured in chronological order.[1]
In 2008, distribution for the Jojo's Bizarre Adventure OVA series was indefinitely suspended following the controversy over the presence of the Qur'an in Episode 6.[2][3] The same story arc would later be adapted for the later JoJo's Bizarre Adventure TV series in its second season, which aired from 2014 to 2015.
JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Phantom Blood (ジョジョの奇妙な冒険 ファントムブラッド JoJo no Kimyō na Bōken Fantomu Buraddo) is a 2007 Japanese anime film based on Part 1 of the JoJo's Bizarre Adventure manga series entitled Phantom Blood. The film was released on February 17, 2007, to commemorate JoJo author Hirohiko Araki's 20th year of publishing.[1][2] Animation was handled by Studio A.P.P.P., the same staff who handled the earlier JoJo's Bizarre Adventure OVA based on Part 3 Stardust Crusaders. The film had a limited screening in Japanese theaters and has never been released on home video.
The film generally follows the story of the Phantom Blood manga arc, featuring Jonathan Joestar in his fight against adoptive brother Dio Brando, who after years of attempting to break Jonathan (including kissing his childhood love Erina Pendleton) poisons their father and becomes an immortal vampire through the use of a Stone Mask. Jonathan receives training in an ancient martial arts technique known as Hamon from the eccentric Italian man Will A. Zeppeli, whose father originally discovered the Stone Mask, and the two attempt to kill Dio before he uses his newfound powers to enslave humanity
