In 1990, at the tender age of 22, New York City native Alexis Bittar launched his eponymous costume jewelry label from his modest East Village apartment. It didn't take long before the buzz about Bittar's ingenious, hand-carved, gilded acrylic creations reached the Guggenheim Museum and Henri Bendel. By 1999, Bittar was designing couture jewelry for Burberry — reinterpreting the brand's signature plaid in Lucite.
