Eugene Napoleón Flandin was an accomplished artist and antiquary accompanied the french ambassador to Persia, De Cercey from 1839-41. In 1843 he assisted Botta in his excavations  at Niniveh and Khorsabad and took part in the publication of the "Voyage a Ninive". The lithography comes from the work "L´Orient" being volume I devoted to Constantinople with a selection of fine views. The book was published in installments and is considered one of the best books dedicated to Turkey in the XIX century. Flandin was pupil of Horace Vernet.
