Up for Auction is this PCGS Certified Solvent Smear Error on a FR# 1936-F,  $2.00 Federal Reserve Note, Series 1995 from the Atlanta District.  Errors on all $2.00 notes are not easy to find!  This in part is due to the fact that press runs for $2.00 notes are infrequent, there are less press make-readys, and less total printing impressions, all resulting in less errors produced and escaping the facility.

This solvent smear occurred when the printing ink in the ink fountain became contaminated with solvent.  Intaglio Printing is a cross between Gravure and Offset Printing.  Unlike Offset Printing plates, Intaglio Printing plates are etched in reverse.  The recessed areas of the printing plate ride in a trough of printing ink, as the plate cylinder rotates, a doctor blade squeegees off the excess ink, leaving ink only in the recessed areas.  When the printing plate contacts the sheet of paper, the ink in the recesses transfers to the paper.  Because this printing Ink was contaminated, it did not have the correct viscosity to remain in the recesses of the plate, so when the transfer occurred, it was more of a smear, then a transfer.  The result is what you see on the note pictured.

This is a dramatic error, which increases its appeal even more.  PCGS has graded this note as Extremely Fine 40PPQ, but look at the scans to determine the grade for yourself.  The signatures on this note are:

Treasurer of The United States:  Mary Ellen Withrow

Secretary of the Treasury:  Robert E. Rubin
