Up for auction is this Sylacauga, Alabama, Charter #10879, $10.00 1902 Third Charter Blue Seal Plain Back.  Fr. #632, with treasury signatures of Houston B. Teehee as Register of the Treasury and John Burke as Treasurer of The United States.  The cashier of this bank is G.A. Murchison and the President of the bank is L.L. Smith, and their signatures are stamped.

This bank chartered in July of 1916, taking the name, “The City National Bank of Sylacauga, Alabama”.  This bank issued 111,760 large size Nationals, from 1916 thru 1929 when the Bureau of Engraving & Printing switched over to print small size National Currency, Series of 1929.   This note was probably issued between 1926 – 1927 by the bank.

This note has dirt and soil on both sides.  There are no rips, tears or pinholes in this note.  There are two very minor splits, one in the top margin at the right, the other in the bottom margin, just to the left of the center fold.  Both of them are 1/32 of an inch long or .03125 thousandths of an inch!  I mention them for accuracy only, but they do not affect the note in any way.  I have marked these areas in orange, try to even find them without my markings.  I grade this note as a solid Fine, but you look at the scans and judge the quality for yourself. The Kelly Census shows 10 large size notes reported on the bank.  There are currently 6 - $5.00 Blue Seal Plain Backs, 3 - $10.00 Blue Seal Plain Backs, and 1 - $20.00 Blue Seal Plain Back currently reported on this bank.  Four of the 10 notes are Fines, none are higher, the rest all are all lower grade.  This is typical for a southern bank, as the hot wet climate took its toll on these banknotes.

This note would make a fine addition to any Alabama State National Banknote collection.  The bank was located in Talladega County.   This note should appeal to those collecting that County and its surrounding areas.  This note might also appeal to anyone interested in NASCAR, as the famed Talladega 500 Race is held in that county.  Don’t let this note get away!
