Michael Jackson setzte mit Off the Wall einen Meilenstein in der Geschichte des Pop und demonstrierte im Alter von nur 20 Jahren bereits seine Extraklasse als Musiker und kreativer Visionär. Für den Rolling Stone war klar, dass Michael Jackson dank Off the Wall die moderne Popmusik, wie wir sie kennen erfunden hatte.

Vor allem aber hatte Michael Jackson ein Werk geschaffen, dessen perfekte Symbiose aus Entertainment und großartigem Songwriting für seine schwarzen Musikerkollegen als leuchtendes Vorbild diente. Damals, am Ende der 1970er, kämpften sie immer noch für gebührende soziale Anerkennung, und der Erfolg von Off The Wall gab ihnen die nötige Portion Selbstvertrauen, die viele große Karrieren befeuerte. Musiker wie Beyoncé, Pharrel Williams, Kendrick Lamar oder The Weeknd wurden durch Off the Wall entscheidend beeinflusst; die LP inspirierte sie dazu, es dem King of Pop gleichzutun und wie er in den Riege der Weltstars aufzusteigen.
