Beautiful antique Art Nouveau vanity set

c 1910, with a heavily decorated jewelry box made of heavy cast gilt metal, and a gilt brass ? mirror.

These metal jewelry boxes were highly sought after in the early 1900s. They were decorated with beautiful maidens, then later with flower motifs.

The type of flowers on the box could represent a romantic message: daisies meant innocence, and roses were for love.

Since most metal boxes made at the turn of the century have fallen apart, they are becoming more scarce.

This vanity set is incredibly detailed, depicting a nymph-like maiden and roses on the box and a nude maiden with flowing hair on the mirror. The relief of the roses is quite high.

The box is stamped on the bottom with maker's mark, WM mfg , the mirror is unmarked.

This jewelry box is one of the largest models ,with L 10.5"/W 5"/H 5".

It weighs about 6 lbs.

The mirror measures 9" tall.

The set is in original antique condition, with some gilt wearing off, and presents a nice patina throughout. The hinge is damaged on one side and the top can be removed.  Not noticeable when it is closed. The mirror also has small damage along the side, and the glass may need to be replaced, please see and enlarge pictures for more details.
