 DESCRIPTION:
Offered is this magnificent, highly accomplished late 19th-early 20th century American watercolor landscape painting, done by the American painter C. Russell, not to be confused with Charles Russell Martin or Charles Russell Loomis, late 19th century American painters, who were also active watercolorists and landscape painters of that same period. This watercolor painting is still in its original, period gold gilt frame with gold painted mat board. The scene is of a grouping of white birch trees nestled together on a grassy bluff above a river or pond. The leaves and grasses have an autumnal palette and the scene is one of approaching fall and the transition to the colder temperatures and snow of winter. The painting was taken out of its frame to inspect the paper and the watercolor appears to have been laid down on another piece of paper, which looks to be archival and possibly prepared far later to protect the painting from the pine backing boards. The work is signed 'C. Russell' and dated 1895. Gorgeous.
