ARTIFACT: This is a stunning circa 1950 Viking Air Lines pilot wing and hat badge. Both are minty and made in enameled sterling silver by the maker Green Kansas City. Viking was formed as Aerovan Express Corporation in 1945 by Roscoe Hart and Jack Lewin. The name was changed to Viking Air Lines in 1946. It mainly flew low-fare coast-to-coast services. Because of this and the use of C-46s coupled with irregular, nonscheduled flights, the airlines was shut down in 1949, having its registration revoked for excessive frequency. It was re-established in 1961. This new version of Viking was focused on military cargo contracts.
