Unworn 天狗 心斎橋 Tengu Shinsaibashi Zori

This lovely pair of vintage zori were made by Osakas iconic Tengu Hakimono of Shinsaibashi. They have been stored for a very long time but are in perfect, never-worn condition in their original paulownia wood box and packaging. They are a rich gold with olive trim and arabesque accents and all-leather tops and soles. The original price tag from Tengu shows they sold for ¥50,000 or about $500. Finest quality, size: 23.5cm

Tengu was founded 1894 (Meiji 27) in Shinsaibashi, Osaka and was one of Japan’s finest footwear makers, producing beautifully designed, Japanese made zori and geta for generationsSadly they lost out to competition from overseas manufacturing and closed their doors forever in 2011 after 117 years in business.

Note… the size of footwear in Japan is considered largely irrelevant as traditionally there was only one mens size and one womens size and you adjust your foot to the sandal rather than the sandal to your foot; so overhanging the heel by an inch or so is considered normal and even optimal…

Made in Japan
