This is the fasting growing hardwood tree in the world, which can get to 8 feet (2.7 metres) or more in its first year from seed. In 3 years it can be 15 to 20 feet tall or more and flowering. It is, however, an ideal tree for gardens as its roots are non-invasive and it will not penetrate the foundations of buildings etc. The first picture shows the tree some 4 months after the 3rd picture (seedlings), it really does grow that fast. It grows 10–25 m (33–82 ft) tall, with huge five-lobed leaves 15–40 cm (6–16 in) across, arranged in opposite pairs on the stem. On young growth, the leaves may be in whorls of three and be much bigger than the leaves on more mature growth. The leaves can be mistaken for those of the catalpa. It can be kept in check by judicious hard pruning, which will result in bigger leaves.
