 DESCRIPTION:

Offered is this recently discovered and absolutely wonderful mid-19th century American folk art hand carved wood handled, toothed brass wheel primitive pie or pastry crimper. It remains untouched and undisturbed, with its original dry wood finish and original aged brass patina, with episodes of verdigris oxidation found on its surfaces. The brass wheel spins freely and the brass wheel holding stem is encased by the wood handle and held with two brass pegs. The wheel is affixed to the upper brass stem by a single brass axle or wire rod. It is signed on one side of the decorated wooden handle, with hand scribed, high case letters 'M.A.' The wood handle has exquisite, wonderful folk art, primitive chip carving that consists of two rows of staggered, recessed triangular forms that are painstakingly carved into the wood. These aren't stamped but individually carved. The center of the handle has a 2-sided leaf stem pattern. An extraordinary piece of mid-19th century American folk art. From New England with demonstrative care and love. It was most likely carved and decorated by a young American man for the source of his affection or by a young husband as a gift for his youthful wife, making note of the care and affection with which she would carry out her domestic tasks in the kitchen for her family and loved ones. Terrific and absolutely untouched. Wonderful.
