Dean’s Moveable Dog Party, 1859, Pop-Up, Toy Book

[MOVABLE BOOK]. DEAN'S MOVEABLE DOGS PARTY. Dean & Son: London: 1859.

Early moveable toy book. Complete with 8 mechanical plates. Publisher’s key to the rear board dates this from March of 1859 and lists it as one of 4000 from that printing. This is a hardcover title in illustrated paper covered boards with the original green cloth backstrip. Inside are eight hand colored copper engraved movable illustrations (two diptych images for a total of eight movable plates) activated via a pull tab mechanism at the bottom of each. A few (maybe 2) headless dogs, overall mostly complete. One of the earliest titles by Dean & Son.

Dean & Son Moveable Dog’s Party was one of the early productions of Dean and Son, this book and The Puppies Visit to His Friends were printed letterpress and then hand colored using a "pouchoir," or stencil, method, using simple tab devices to make the dogs' heads move. This copy is very good or better.
