Here we have an large untreated natural earth mined precious solid Australian semi-black pinfire opal cabochon.

This big opal cabochon weighs 5.87 carats.

It measures approximately 15/16" long by 9/16" wide by 1/8" deep (23.45mm x 13.81mm x 2.69mm)

The play of color here is significant as it is so very rare - this pattern with tiny sparks of color is termed "pinfire" in the trade. It looks like small tiny dots or pin prick sized sparks of color which shift and change across the whole surface. Here this pattern covers the whole surface with equal intensity on a gray body color. Significant too is that there is a lot of red visible as well as every other color of the rainbow inclusive of orange, yellow, blue, green and violet. The pinfire effect is difficult to photograph it is layered and intense with equal brightness across the whole opal. In my view in person more red can be seen than the photos capture. This is a lively very beautiful natural opal.

It has never been set and is in beautiful condition as it was polished many years ago. To the back of the cabochon we see underneath the precious opal seam the plain grayish colored natural opal. To the top there are two small pin sized areas or inclusions of the natural bedrock from which the opal was mined. This opal is a vintage cabochon there is no crazing or damage and it presents beautifully.

The photos form part of the description of this precious opal. The colors of precious opal change continuously in different lighting conditions, inside and outside and from every angle. These photos show the opal in daylight equivalent lighting conditions. In other lighting conditions more red may be visible and of course you cannot see the colors of any opal (or any gem for that matter) without adequate light.
