Sharp Old Photogravure Print of Fritz von Uhde's "Dutch Sewing Bee (or Room)"
Intricately Detailed Work circa 1894, Matted but no glass
Approx: 18.5" W x 15.5" H (frame), 12" x 9 1/8" (Under Matt) 11" x 8" Ink Area

Terrific & rare antique copper plate etching print of Fritz von Uhde's "Dutch Sewing Bee" or "Dutch Sewing Room" from 1882.  Great look to this print with sharp details and solid ink as noted from the photogravure process.  This etching by done by the Goupil & Company who were noted as leaders in this engraving process.  There were some earlier etchings of this work by Abot, but not nearly as detailed as this one which is labeled "Copyright 1894 by L. Christ Delmonico, owner of the painting" and "Photogravure Goupil".  L. Christ Delmonico was listed as a Art Dealer, Collector from what we could find and may have been Lorenzo Crist Delmonico (of the Delmonico restauranteers in New York) but we are not sure.

Not many of this print are found.  We only found one ever offered on eBay and that was 10 years back and unframed.  Most you see are of the less quality etchings done prior to Delmonico allowing the original painting to be copied in 1894.

Fritz von Uhde is a famous German artist with an extensive and impressive history not only for his talents but his innovation and influences on changes in art in Germany and beyond.  His style bounced between Realism to Impressionism but it was it's use in unique subject matter that set him apart.  He had many religious themed works and was an early open air painter as well.  Uhde is an artist whose history is well worth a read if you have time, incredible skill and mind.  Many of his works are housed in Museums throughout the world and held in private collections.

This print, particularly the ink area, is in really good shape, but the matting has some discoloring as shown in pictures and what appears to be some attempted paint touch ups on the matt edges from years back.  The matting and print area appear connected and the back of bulk paper is a single piece not separated as in modern matting processes. We left the print as we found it, but it would look really nice with a simple black band paper boarder of about 3/4" around edges of frame.  That would knock out the touch ups and bring the gorgeous print into focus.  We will use care in shipping so as not allow damage to ink or other.
