DESCRIPTION:
Pencil signed 'P. Moore, (19)'73, with an inscription "To Diane & Paul Love, Pa..." This wonderful, kinetic and gestural color monotype print, is extremely direct, juicy and immediate. It looks nearly as fresh and wet as when it was first realized, some almost 50 years ago. The process of monotype printmaking was favored by Modernist printmakers, due to its gestural, direct application of inks to a piece of plexiglass or metal sheet and then pressed over artist paper. The inked plate would then be run through a large printmaking print machine, rolling over the top of cotton rag artist's paper, creating the printed image. Sometimes, in the absence of monotype printmaking equipment, the artist would apply the inks to the plexiglass or metal sheet and then simply place the artist paper on top of the inked surface and apply evenly distributed weight, insuring ink transfer to the surface of the paper. Often what happens are unintentional anomalies and desirable artistic 'accidents,' which often, the artist is actually looking for. There is a conscious surrender of complete artistic control in favor of the unexpected and unanticipated. This is precisely what makes monotype prints so exciting. Fresh, alive and very beautiful.
