This plate shows costumes of The Netherlands, early 19th century. A woman in Amsterdam is selling fish in the streets and a gentleman wants to buy fish for his family. This decorative print originates from: 'Afbeeldingen van de kleedingen, zeden en gewoonten in Holland (in de Bataafsche Republiek), met den aanvang der negentiende eeuw.' (tranl.: Images of costume, morals and habits in the Netherlands, at the beginning of the 19th c.), by E. Maaskamp, published in Amsterdam, 1811. The first 16 plates of this work were originally published in five installments from 1803 to 1807 titled: 'Afbeeldingen van kleeding, zeden en gewoonten in de Bataafsche Republiek...' The accompanying texts as well as the captions on the originally 16 plates were in Dutch and in French. Re-editions appeared in (1808) and in 1811 with 4 additional plates (Nrs. 17-20). An English edition with the same plates with the Dutch/French captions was published by Maaskamp in 1808. Another edition with English texts was printed by J. Barfield in London for Colnaghi & Co, also in London in 1810. These 1808-1811 editions have both the addresses of Maaskamp and Colnaghi engraved on the plates, except for plate 1 which has the address of Maaskamp only.Artists and Engravers: The publisher is Evert Maaskamp (1769-1834). Condition: Excellent. General age related toning. Some light shop soiling. Remains of wrapper attachment in left margin, not effecting image. Rear blank. Please study scans carefully.
