What are worm castings?

Worm castings are an organic form of fertilizer produced from earthworms. Worm castings is essentially earthworm waste, (which is completely odorless).

Worm Castings contain a highly active biological mixture of bacteria, enzymes and remnants of plant matter. They are rich in water-soluble plant nutrients, and contain more than 50% more humus than what is normally found in topsoil.

Worm castings are packed with minerals that are essential for plant growth, such as concentrated nitrates, phosphorus, magnesium, potassium and calcium. It also contains manganese, copper, cobalt, zinc, borax, iron, carbon and nitrogen and all of these minerals are immediately available to the plant without the risk of ever burning the plant.

Worm castings are completely harmless to animals and children but have a natural resistance to insects. That's because earthworms produce an enzyme called Chitinase. Chitinase degrades Chitin, the element that comprises the exoskeleton of most insects. When a pest feeds on plants treated with worm castings, its exoskeleton will begin to dissolve and it will soon perish.
