The Butterick Publishing Company was founded in 1863 by Ebenezer Butterick to distribute the first graded sewing patterns, tissue paper dress patterns offered in multiple standard sizes. Butterick, together with his wife Ellen, is regarded as the inventor of graded sewing patterns, which revolutionised home sewing.

This 'bulletin', with a preface by Louis Dempsey, Vice President of The Butterick Publishing Co., was prepared with teachers and students of dressmaking in mind. It comprehensively covers every important step in the making of a dress, from the selection of style and material to the final finishing of the garment.
