The mantle has been safely  stored for over 50 years

This mantle is one part of this Southern Antique collector's possessions-it was once put to practical use in, warming the grand living room where it once stood . Then as the old home was destroyed this collector carefully salvaged the old mantle and stored in for more than half of a century.

The  1960's Newspaper article said."Maybe the collector didn’t even remember where it was stored or why he had saved it all those years. Maybe just because he liked it , with no use in mind. But the fact remains that, in depths of the Great Depression when the decorative features of razed residences might be had, at least, for carting them away at most, for a song. 

Mantels of this type were popular with upscale 19th Century Architects and were used to grace the mansions they built during the last half of the Century.
