A  Handsome Antique  Plantation Desk Cabinet with Glass Doors circa 1880's.

This  cabinet measures  total width of  about 46 inches, a depth of   about  22  inches. The height from floor to desk  is about 30 inches, and   total height of  about 80 inches.
( This  cabinet was  from my family and stood for 50 years in their home amidst many antiques.)

It has nice wood and craftsmanship.- A lovely  cabinet that would accent any prominent home.

Desk  details:

It's a later 19th century piece, not really of the  date of plantation pieces, but it is of that type drop-front desk.  A walnut plantation type desk, with four turned legs and  drawers below a drop-front writing surface. There are two glazed glass doors above,  ornamented with large overhang moldings.

It is a great  piece of early Americana  is a fine example of early craftmanship. It is unusual in the fact that it has features of an early plantation desk with a traditional secretary type top.

Unique drop down  to reveal desk area. The  desk has  desk compartment that consists of  storage slots.  When the panel is up, it conceals the cubbies that  can  used for organizing documents, and storing writing implements and paper.

The writing surface is  covered with a green felt.

Ample storage is found in the bottom drawer with wood pull, brass key escutcheons and locks.  Nice turned feet are found on this handsome desk.   Unfortunately we do not have a key for the top doors.

Desks with fall- or drop-fronts remain an excellent choice for small rooms where a writing surface comes in handy but space for a table or full-sized desk isn’t an option.

Condition: Shows appropriate use wear, markings, and minor distressing. -see pictures. It  does not impair integrity.

Any antique over 100 years old will have some type of slight or minor imperfections or marks of character…..and these time-acquired features  often intrigue collectors to ponder about how the piece must have been used and by whom.  Such marks of use and character I think, add to the authenticity, charm, and desirability of the piece
