Metal wheel set for Holiday Express Tree Top Tender car

Upgrade your Tender's plastic wheels with heavier and sturdier metal wheels.

This listing is for a set of 4 metal wheels only as shown in the first photo only.

Includes one geared axle and 3 idle axles. This set of 4 axles can also be used to upgrade the Mailbox car, Santa's Toy Box caboose car, Candy Dancer car and Passenger and Reindeer cars. Cannot be used on the Log Mill, Tanker or Bakery cars.

These metal wheels will create a much lower center of gravity on your Tender which will help to prevent derailments and keep the electrical pick-up brushes under the Tender in better contact with the track.

This upgrade is a must if running a longer heavier train because when the Tender car goes around a corner with a lot of train cars hooked up behind it, the springs underneath the electrical contacts tend to lift and derail a lightweight plastic-wheeled Tender.

The first generations of Holiday Express trains all came with these metal wheels in the Tender, but in the later models, plastic was used instead to save on cost.

These are very easy to install if you have basic repair skills; just pry each bottom cover off that holds the wheels in place (they have a snap-clip at each end of the cover).

Listing is for a set of 4 metal wheels only as shown in the first photo (1 axle is geared for the on-board animation). The next eleven photos are for mounting reference only. Photos 2 and 3 show the metal wheels in place of the plastic set on the 384/387 Tender and also on the Dillards 383 Tender with the polar bear cub on it.

Install instructions, see all 12 attached photos:

photo 4: shows the snap-on plastic axle cap on the underside of the wheel assemblies

photo 5: remove cap by prying one end up with a small flat screwdriver, then do the opposite side of the cap. Do one end of the car at a time to avoid losing parts inside the wheel assembly

photo 6: lift the cap up to remove the plastic wheeled axle, the cap has a wire attached but there is enough slack to remove the axle

photo 7 & 8: do the axle one end at a time, remove the old axle and then drop in the new one with metal wheels

photo 9 & 10: be sure to hold the car upside down (not on its side) so when you remove the cap, the gear assembly doesn't fall out

photo 11 & 12: also be sure that when you remove the axle, the axle bushings don't come out with the axle (they tend to get stuck on the axle. If it does come out, just line it up and drop it back in place.
