DESCRIPTION:
Offered for your review and consideration is this absolutely wonderful and now quite scarce, early to mid 19th century American Folk Art antique, primitive, vinegar sponge-painted, ox-blood red and burnt sienna, small, diminutive hand decorated, hand painted dome top personal or traveling pine wooden box, featuring wonderful, original decorative brass cover handle and front key plate, clasp and hardware. The vinegar sponge painted exterior of this quite delicate, diminutive box, was masterfully realized, with spirited horizontal, repeated motifs on the front panel, while the top features another pyramid sponge patterning altogether. The side panels feature swirling design, resembling the tornadic patterning of the billowing clouds of a hurricane. The back is decorated with a series of sponged 'V' shapes. The bottom of the box is covered with green felt, as well as the interior. This was likely done previously in the 1950's or 1960's, to line the interior of the box and provide protection for surfaces it would rest on. An amazing piece of early to mid 19th century American Folk Art. Absolutely gorgeous. Tops shelf.
