HERBIE HANCOCK Jazz Time CD Album
Fabri Editori
JT-02
Italy
1989

Hard-to-find Italian-issued collection of Herbie Hancock's alternative-takes, obscure album-tracks and a rare Japanese session.

First-up are two alternative-takes from the 1961 Pepper Adams Donald Byrd Quintet "Out Of This World" album-session with Layman Jackson on bass and Jimmy Cobb on Drums; "Curro's" and "Daydreams" (renamed here as "
Jammin With Herbie" and "Soul Power" respectively). Both of these tracks are only otherwise available on a Spanish issued LP from 1988.

Next come three tracks from Ron Carter's 1977 "Third Plane" album with Tony Williams on drums; "Dolphin Dance" , "Third Plane" and "Quiet Times".

Finally two tracks from a rare session recorded at
Denen Colosseum, Tokyo on July 29 1978. "Muffin' and "New Song". These recordings were issued as one-half of a Japan-only Ron Carter LP called "1+3", but have not been pressed anywhere else. The Italian compilers have actually made a mistake here; it is actually Hank Jones sitting-in on "Muffin'". The real jewel on the CD however is "New Song" aka "New Song#3" (from the "1+3" LP). Composed by Hancock himself, it is twelve minutes of clever, noodley self-indulgence, received with delight by the Japanese crowd!
