Essene is an underrated film in Frederick Wiseman's underrated filmography. It is the sixth documentary work by Wiseman, released in 1972 and relating to us the life of the monks of an Anglican monastery in Michigan. Most of the shots bring us sermons, prayers and more or less theological discussions. This film is perhaps the slowest and most static.
