For the Shakuhachi Bamboo flute buyers:

Due to the skill required, the time involved, and the range of quality in materials to craft bamboo Shakuhachi, one can expect to pay from USD 300 to USD 5,000 for a new or used flute. Because each piece of bamboo is unique, Shakuhachi cannot be mass-produced, and craftsmen must spend much time finding the correct bore shape for each individual flute to result in correct pitch over all notes. Specimens of extremely high quality, with valuable inlays

**What is Shakuhachi?

Shakuhachi is an instrument belonging to WOODWIND family.

In ancient China's history, there was an Emperor who set the length of of this instrument to be 1.8 feet, when later on it was introduced  to Japan sometime in the Tang Dynasty. Since then people in Japan started to call this type of flute “Shakhachi”.  “Shaku” in Japanese means feet; and “Hachi” means eight, and that's how it was called “Shakuhachi”, which means 1.8 feet in length. The name of this intrument was derived from its length in feet.

**The Difference between Shakuhachi and regular flute.

The Shakuhachi can be simply categorized into:

The traditional Shakuhachi

The design of traditional Shakuhachi has four wind holes in the front and one in the back.

The Modern Shakuhachi ( which is called Dong Xiao ).

People found by altering the shape of the mouthpiece and by drilling more wind holes greatly made the flutes more versatile in terms of its performing capabilities. So you see there are flutes that come with more than four wind holes like that of a Shakuhachi. Not only in the number of holes, has the length of the flute also varied. Most of the Dong Xiao we would find may have 5, 6,7,8 holes, or even more. These Don Xiaos are regarded more like contemporary instruments already, while the traditional Shakuhachi MUST is pentatonic. The pentatonic notes were ancient China's music scale. That is very interesting.

The Sound of Flute ( Shakuhachi and Dong Xiao as well) -- is peaceful, smoothing, and healing.

Therefore, flute with four wind holes in the front and one in the back is called Shakuhachi; flutes with more than four wind holes are called Dong Xiao.

No matter it is Shakuhachi or Dong Xiao, the biggest difference is the shape of the mouthpiece, it makes the flute sound differently.  V or U shapes are mostly seen, but for Shakuhachi it was sliced to an angle of 30 degree opening mouth.

TWO different mouthpiece shapes --Tang's Horn & U shape, it is up to your preference.

**Which is better? Shakuhachi or Dong Xiao Shakuhachi?

As for this question I would like to leave it to you all to find out by yourself. Everyone has his individual preference and tastes and perceptions by the instrument he is playing and it certainly shall differ from one to the other, so it is a question without a correct answer. The way you like will be the answer. You can only experience it  by yourself!

**There is a saying:

?The key of making an excellent Shakuhachi is having acquired the right type of bamboo. The Master craftsman made the right shape... and it is you, the player, who bring it the spiritual life.?

I would like to give you couple links and you can hear the vivid demonstration of this instrument :
