Young Folks History of Rome (1878)

This illustrated antique book offers a history of Rome especially written for students.  It covers the history until the reign of Charles the Great on the Western empire.  It was published in 1878 by D. Lothrop and Company of Boston, Mass.  The front flyleaf shows the original owner was Maria Champion of Illinois and it was later given to Georgie, another family member at Christmas 1887. 

There are about 100 illustrations.

The contents includes the wanderings of Aeneas, the Founding of Rome, Numa and Tullus, Driving Out the Tarquins, War with Porsena, Roman Government, Meneius Arippa's Fable, Coriolanus and Cincinnatus, The Decembirs, Camillus' Banishment, The Sack of Rome, and so on for 46 chapters.  

This book is in good/very good condition for age.  There is some wear to the cover at corners and edges as shown. There is good retention of the gilt and black titles and design.  The joints are intact.  The hinges a somewhat cracks and holding. The binding is very good and all pages are attached.  The pages and illustrations are well preserved.  There are tears, no dogears and there is no internal handwriting after the family inscription on the flyleaf.

There are 441 pages and the book measures 7 1/4 inches by 5 inches.
