BoffinBeads Vintage is delighted to offer to you today this unique, pretty pair of true vintage 1950s Hawaiian 'pikake' faux ivory early carved lucite, celluloid or plastic jasmine bud-shaped earrings as per photos 1 -7 above, photographed with some dried-up real jasmine buds top right of pictures 3 and 7. Perfect addition to your vintage wardrobe! Length with plain fish hooks: long at 62 mm or just under 2.50", weight each earring 1.6 grams which is lightweight in earring terms; length with brushed ball fish hooks: 67 mm or 2.50"; shepherd's crook hooks: 56 mm or just under 2.5"; heart design leverbacks: 62 mm or just under 2.5" and with 4 mm ball studs: 43 mm or just under 1.75" which is a bit shorter than all the other versions - this shorter pair is currently available. These long, somewhat delicately-constructed, kinetic wobbly earrings hang from ANY type of ear fittings as you see in the photos and in our other listings in NEW .925 sterling silver. Vintage fine .925 silver metal chain runs through the top bigger bead and is connected to the dainty lower bead and tiny bottom round bead by means of a simple looping method. These pins should oxidise and mellow with age to give that true antique look. Pikake beads like these you see here were probably produced in Hong Kong to replicate the Cantonese carved bone original beads sold at Ming's Jewellery Shop at one time and produced by costume jewellery designers like Kenneth Lane and John Roberts to name but two so far researched. The design is based on the jasmine flower bud of  jasminum sambac solander from India, a bigger variation to the jasmine available generally in plant shops in Britain as per photos 4 and 7. On Hawaii, such 'lei' necklaces are described as being given for any celebration and made out of live, fresh flowers strung on long lengths of string, described very aptly in Dorothy and Bob Hargreaves little book THE FLOWER LEIS OF HAWAII.
