BoffinBeads Vintage is pleased to have on Ebay today another unique-on-the-planet pair of earrings that no-one else has got in quite this combination. Whopping tassels, antique vintage glass beads made in Murano Island, Italy and/or old Bohemia/Czech Republic as long ago as two hundred years, these beads were made for export to Africa and circulated there in various countries worn by local people. These earrings have a magical talisman incorporated within them, hanging on an antique piece of silver chain, a green 'vaseline' glass talhakimt to ward off the evil eye and keep the wearer safe. The beads are more or less matched in weight, colour, shape and translucence although not completely, there are some interesting textures seen in this particular pair. The tassels are joined to a vintage ridged silver-plated beadcap and hung from NEW .925 sterling silver long USA-made ear fittings as you see in the photos but you can request other ear fittings to be put on instead including clips as you see in the bottom row of a couple of the photos. LONG, measuring 78 mm or nearly 3" and 80 mm nearly 3.25", weight is medium to heavyish at 6.8 grams and 7.1 grams!! Beautiful colours, just lovely! The tassels are fairly tight at the moment being on pre-stretched Barbour linen thread and might loosen with use - they take some considerable time to construct using a beading needle no fatter than a human hair! Nice to fiddle with if you have the inclination. These beads are now considered collectable as no longer made exactly the same in some cases, you can read about similar beads in beadology books like AFRICA ADORNED by Angela Fisher; THE HISTORY OF BEADS by Lois Sherr Dubin; BEADS OF THE WORLD - A Collector's Guide and Price Reference by Peter Francis Jr. and other excellent books too many to list here, enquire at your local library and request to borrow them for a reasonable fee.
