orn Norma Jeane Mortensen in 1926 and brought up in an orphanage, Marilyn Monroe became one of the most famous faces and names of this century. This book offers a new insight into her life, separating fact from fiction, myth from reality, to reveal the determined, though finally tragic, personality beneath the fabulous façade Marilyn presented to the world. Marlyn follows the life and career of a most remarkable and glamorous star. It tells of her childhood and assesses the significance of her early years in explaining a traumatic life. Was she a victim of Hollywood, as the gossip columnists had it, or does a better explanation of her character and fate lie deeper in her background?

Her stardom rested on the dumb-blonde bombshell look of such films as Gentlemen Prefer Blondes and Some Like It Hot, but her private life attracted even more publicity. Her marriages to Joe DiMaggio and Arthur Miller - and the subsequent divorces - hit the headlines. Her famous nude calendar ("Did you have anything on?" "Oh yes - Chanel No. 5"), her relationships with her.

Co-stars and directors, and her tragic end are rationally and objectively analyzed. With over 130 photographs in both black and white and colour, the pictures dramatically illustrate the text, showing Marilyn in her films and her off-screen life, with her husbands and lovers, and many of her famous - and infamous - modelling poses. Marilyn is a tribute to one of the most intriguing stars of this century, and helps to unravel the tangled mystery of a beautiful, but ultimately sad, legend.
