Michel
Maer for Christian Dior vintage mid to late 1950s, these predate 1957 & it
is worth pointing out that Michel Maer only designed for Christian Dior
for the 4-5 years up until Dior's death, Yves Saint Laurent did not continue with this collusion.
An incredibly rare signed
set in A1 MINT original condition. None of the crystals have died, & the rainbow hued Aurora
Borealis, created thanks to a collusion between Christian Dior &
Swarovski, have to be seen to be believed, this set looks like it has
just been stolen out of an ancient Indian Mogul´s palace .
Huge deep
dark blue Sapphire pear shaped crystals enhanced with clear & AB
drops, the same brilliant diamond white crystals decorating the
necklace, hand worked throughout, every single portion of this set being
finished by hand.
Michelle Maer
collaborated with & designed astonishing jewelry for Christian Dior
up until Dior´s death in 1957, for reasons unknown, this collaboration
did not continue when Yves saint Laurent took over the reins of Dior
Couture in 1957, it is believed that YSL wanted to stamp his own more
modern taste on both Dior fashions & jewelry, that he would not be
able to work with Maer, who belonged to a different era.
Michelle
Maer was ruined & with thousands of signed pieces no longer wanted
by the House of Dior, was soon to file for bankruptcy. we can only
begin to imagine what he must have gone through, with untold 10s of
$1,000s tied up in stock & materials. Dior Couture, now under the
leadership of Yves Saint Laurent & again for reasons unknown, did
not want completed pieces destined for Dior & then to rub salt into
the wound, refused Michelle
Maer the benefit of selling off any of his stock which was signed
Christian Dior.
Most of the pieces sold after this time (&
certainly all of the jewelry that ended up in the bankruptcy auction), had the
small Christian Dior / Mitchel Maer oval badge physically removed (filed off) from the
pieces of jewelry, resulting in his once priceless pieces fetching little above scrap
value. It must have been a soul destroying experience for a designer who
had worked alongside of & been a friend of Christian Dior.
The earrings are signed with the classic tiny oval plaque (will add more photos tomorrow), & belong in a serious collection
