It boasts a 1,680- by 1,050-pixel resolution, multiple inputs, a 16:10 aspect ratio, and enough features to satisfy the most demanding home or office user.
Done up in a matte black finish with narrow bezels and outlined in a strip of glossy black trim, the FPD1285W will add style to any desktop environment.
With the five function buttons mounted on the right edge of the panel, the monitor maintains a sleek, uncluttered look, but it's difficult to use the buttons without swiveling the screen or craning your neck to see which button to use
. A sturdy black oval base-and-neck assembly provides plenty of support for the large widescreen panel and offers a variety of position adjustments, including 35 degrees of tilt, 35 degrees of left/right swivel, 4.1 inches of height, and a 90-degree pivot for portrait mode.
The monitor ships with Gateway's EZTune software, which automatically flips the screen image when you rotate the panel for portrait or landscape viewing.
the FPD2185W is equipped with a plethora of video inputs that provide connectivity to external sources such as DVD players, game consoles, camcorders, and set-top cable and satellite boxes
. In addition to digital and analog PC inputs located along the lower rear edge of the panel, you'll find connections for composite video (RGB), component video (RCA), and S-Video signals.
One upstream and two downstream USB ports, as well as a power jack for use with an optional speaker bar ($40), attach to the bottom of the display.
Two more downstream USB ports are conveniently located below the function buttons, making it easy to plug in thumb drives and cameras without having to reach behind the monitor. Analog video and USB cables are included in the box, but DVI, composite, and component cables cost extra.
Fortunately, the stand incorporates a cable management clip to keep everything neat and tidy.
The function buttons are a combination of hot keys and OSD (on-screen display) navigation controls.
The Menu button takes you into the main OSD page, where you can select submenus to adjust color settings, image size, and picture attributes such as brightness, contrast, and gamma levels. You can also change the aspect ratio to stretch a standard movie for widescreen or panoramic viewing, or use the zoom mode to fill the entire screen with a cropped widescreen image.
An Auto Video Enhance menu lets you activate a video-smoothing technology known as DCDi by Faroudja, which reduces jagged-edge artifacts when using an S-Video or composite video signal.
The Input button toggles through various video sources and moves you back to the previous OSD menu page, and the Auto button invokes the auto-adjust function and is used to select menu items.
There's a PiP button for watching video in a smaller window while keeping your desktop active, or you can use the Swap/PiP button to switch the sizes of the images, filling the screen with video while your desktop is displayed in the smaller window.
, the FPD2185W did a fine job of displaying fast-action games and DVD video, thanks to its 8-ms gray-to-gray pixel-response rating.
Doom 3 looked great on the wide screen, and a viewing of The Matrix was flutter-free with minimal artifacts and no noticeable ghosting.
Text was clear and legible at the smallest Arial font size (5.3 points), and color scales were uniform from the dark end of the spectrum to the light end. Grayscale performance was excellent in digital mode, and though the panel showed a slight weakness displaying dark grays when using an analog signal, that did not affect the overall picture quality
. Gateway claims a 178-degree viewing angle (horizontal and vertical) for this LCD, and it performed as advertised.
We were particularly impressed with the bottom angle, which is notoriously weak on many LCD panels.
