The cameos were part of the Hamilton collection assembled during his stay at Naples like British envoy. Hancarville was in charge to draw and catalog the vases that were sold to the British museum in 1772. The set in 4 volumes was highly influential in the architecture, painting and decorative arts of the Neoclassical period in Europe introducing the Greekaesthetic joint with Stuart and Revett's Antiquities of Athens.
