Original WW1 (1917) "RESTRICTED" Imperial German AERIAL RECONNAISSANCE PHOTO
This rare aerial photograph is one of a small collection I'm listing which relates to an area heavily affected by The Battle of Verdun. Whilst the main battle had concluded some months earlier, there were still periods of heavy fighting with many of the villages being completely wiped off the map.
This image features an area of interest labelled 'stützpunkt' (meaning 'base' or 'stronghold') somewhere along the road from Esnes-en-Argonne to Haucourt. The village of Haucourt was totally destroyed and never rebuilt. North is marked by the white arrow in the top left corner.
The rear has been officially stamped with "Nur für den Dienstgebrauch bei Stellungswechsel zu übergeben" which roughly translates as "RESTRICTED - TO BE HANDED OVER WHEN TRANSFERRING POSITION"
Measures approximately 18cm x 13cm.
