We are delighted to offer this  beautifully hand carved, figurative bamboo brush pot. It features activity and landscape of daily village life. The manner of the carving renders incredible personality to the piece. It measures approximately 5” high and is in good antique condition with unmended splits in the bamboo as shown in the photos.

Since the end of the Opium Wars in the 1840s and 50s, China has been a migrant-sending country. The earliest confirmed Chinese migrants to Africa arrived with the Dutch East India company in the Cape, now South Africa, explaining why Johannesburg is home to the largest population of Chinese migrants. Bamboo carved brush pots are indigenous to Asia. That said, it is entirely possible that this piece, which shows significant African influence, was carved in Africa by a Chinese immigrant.

We ask that you carefully review the photos as they tell so much more than we can articulate; and that you zoom in for a closer look at any and all condition issues.
