A quite unusual pair of brass binoculars or opera glasses with a pleasing leather covering to the barrels and a black painted finish. The unusual feature about this pair is the central compass, which appears to be in working order. Binoculars with this added feature are quite a rarity.
Thesse binoculars were made by the French company Chevalier in the nineteenth century, possibly intended for military use.
This item is in reasonable condition for a piece of this age.
The
binoculars have a leather covering to the barrels. The central winder
works well, with no stiffness. The underlying brass is showing through
the black painted finish in a few places, giving a characterful
appearance.
The case is in worn condition (especially the top), but sound. The
case has no strap (it has been replaced with a piece of ribbon).
The
original strap for the binoculars has been replaced by a piece of twine
which is now in two parts. One of the inner eyepiece surround is bent
out of shape, but the outer casing is fine.
