A quite unusual pair of brass binoculars or opera glasses with a pleasing leather covering to the barrels and a black painted finish. The unusual feature about this pair is the central compass, which appears to be in working order. Binoculars with this added feature are quite a rarity.

Thesse binoculars were made by the French company Chevalier in the nineteenth century, possibly intended for military use.

This item is in reasonable condition for a piece of this age.

The binoculars have a leather covering to the barrels. The central winder works well, with no stiffness. The underlying brass is showing through the black painted finish in a few places, giving a characterful appearance.

The case is in worn condition (especially the top), but sound.
The case has no strap (it has been replaced with a piece of ribbon).

The original strap for the binoculars has been replaced by a piece of twine which is now in two parts. One of the inner eyepiece surround is bent out of shape, but the outer casing is fine.

The item measures approx. 4.2 inches (10.5 cm) in in width across the eyepiece lenses, 4.6 inches (11.5 cm) across the objective (front) lenses and 4.25 inches (11 cm) in height when unextended.

A characterful piece ideal for anyone interested in antique optical or scientific items and it would make a superb addition to any steampunk style outfit, perhaps for Whitby, Lincoln or Blists Hill. They could be worn as an accessories attached to a piece of leather thonging (available via E-Bay).
