The Afrocentric Sankofa symbol is one of the sacred Adinkra symbols of the Akan people of West Africa for centuries. The word Sankofa literally means "Go back for it". The symbol is represented by a forward moving metaphorical bird with its head turned backwards to retrieve an egg from its back. The egg symbolizes the future. "Sankofa" reminds us to leverage the lessons of the past to achieve our full potential in the future. That whatever was lost, forgone or stripped of, can be reclaimed, revived, preserved and perpetuated.
