BERLIN KPM STYLE PORCELAIN PLAQUE BEAUTIFUL WOMAN GRAZIELLA 100% HAND PAINTED

A finely painted rectangular shaped antique porcelain plaque portraying a portrait of a beautiful woman.  Other pieces of porcelain that I have owned with this exact same woman’s portrait have identified the subject as “Graziella”.  The plaque shown in my photos is the actual item you will receive.  Please be sure to read the “Age and Condition” and “Approximate Dimensions” paragraphs below.

The plaque is very well painted (it is 100% hand painted) by a very skilled artist, “H. Weigel”, and is so signed on the lower right front corner of the plaque.  The subject is wearing a diaphanous white wrap, has flowers (they look like pink, white and purple pansies to me) in her hair and is wearing what appear to me to be glass ball earrings.  The portrait is very life-like and just stunning!

This piece has been in my personal collection since 2001.  Other than the artist’s signature, the only other marks I find on the plaque are the impressed number “107” on the back side and a group of other numbers and letters written in pencil that appear to be “13/11/221/223” written above the letters “ATX”.  This is not a thick heavy plaque like the KPM plaques, has rounded corners and is not signed, so I would suspect that it would have been made in another factory, probably one of the Hutschenreuther firms.

I will mention that this same portrait is pictured on an oval plaque in the beautiful book KPM Plaques: Gaining and Insight into the Art of Painting on Porcelain by Sean Shakrovski and Vera Rininberg on page 196.  The authors write that the plaque pictured in their book is also unsigned and they attribute it to Hutschenreuther.

Regardless, a strikingly beautiful plaque!!!

Many people put great emphasis on the “artist’s signature” or the “mark” on the reverse side of a piece of porcelain such as this.  However, as experienced collectors of porcelain we have come to realize over the years that the marks on the bottom or back of a piece (such as the “beehive” mark) and the artist signature (like “Wagner”) do not define the piece.  Instead, the style and quality of the decoration and the artistry of the portrait are what really matters.

I do my best to describe all items as accurately as possible and to the best of my ability.  Some of my photos may be somewhat lighter or darker than actual to better show detail or color.  However, do not hesitate to contact me with any questions, comments, or with requests for additional pictures.  I will get back to you as soon as I am able.  I want your transaction with me to be exactly the way I want mine to be when I am the buyer.

Age and Condition

Circa 1900.

It is in excellent to very near mint original condition.  Please look closely at the photos as they are an important part of my description of this item.  I see no chips, flea bites, scratches, cracks, hairlines or repairs to the porcelain.  I also examined the plaque thoroughly front and back under a black-light and found no evidence of any damage or repairs.  There is one tiny area of wear to the lower left front that may have been from where the plaque rested in a frame at some point.  There is also what appears to be discoloration from tape to the reverse side - see the photos.  A stunningly beautiful plaque in near pristine condition and in remarkable shape for its age.  Please keep in mind the photos may be blown up at least 8-10 times normal, so anything you see will look 8-10 times bigger in the photos than it really is.

Please note: if you see a dark spot in the photos, it is from my camera and is not a mark on the piece.  It will be either just to the right of center towards the bottom or slightly above center on the right side of the photo.

Approximate Dimensions

The porcelain plaque measures about 5.875” (14.9 cm) top to bottom by about 3.875” (9.8 cm) left to right by about .25” (0.6 cm) in overall thickness.

Approximate Weight

About 5.5 ounces (157 grams).
